When Herodotus wrote the "Histories" he made a lot of stuff up, but it was at least conceivable that he could have been present or spoken to someone who was present at the events he described. It's important to keep in mind that nobody who writes medieval history has ever been there. The OP is making the unsupported assumption that general history of medieval Europe is accurate in the first place.
